Urban Playground Budapest, I loved how the painted sky matched the real thing!
There’s so much more to Budapest that I want to see, and definitely a lot more that I want to do there, so there’s nothing for it, we will just have to go back. Perhaps in the depths of winter to see it in a different light, and experience those spas when they are at their steaming best…
For now, I will leave you with a final selection of photos of this beautiful city, and below that a restaurant that I really recommend you visit should you happen to be in Hungary’s capital.
And after all that sight-seeing, when you’ve worked up an appetite, go here (be warned, it’s advisable to book 4-6 days in advance for dinner!…)!
Bistro Bock is the brainchild of a few people, most notably József Bock who just happens to be a famous wine producer here. Haven’t heard too much about Hungarian wines apart from their much fêted sweet Tokaji? There’s a good reason for that, it’s not produced in massive quantities, and a lot of it is very good. So good, that they like to keep it for themselves! But this is a really good place to try a vast selection, paired exclusively for our meal by our excellent waiter (not that I could partake obviously, but Mr R knows his wines, and is still raving about this place!)…
There isn’t a children’s menu, but that’s not to say they aren’t welcome – as long as they are willing to try some Hungarian influenced dishes. The Small People (taking after their mother) read the dessert section first, and both opted for something slightly lighter in the form of a classic Chicken Soup with dumplings and a huge basket of fresh bread. Part of me wondered whether we would end up helping with this, but in all honesty we didn’t get a look in.
We opted for starters of Salmon Tartare, and followed with melt in your mouth duck on red cabbage with dumplings… It’s not hard to pick out the different tastes that make up Hungarian cuisine, from its Magyar origins and Ottoman and Austrian influences – together it makes for a really good mix.
And the piece de resistance for me (and the Small People – Mr R had eaten so much he couldn’t manage one!)… The dessert – Eszterházy Cake – the lightest walnut sponge with buttercream ever. It’s definitely up there on the list I keep in my head of “Best Desserts I Have Ever Eaten”.
